We are located in the Duchess area in Southern Alberta, which is
about 1 1/2 hours east of Calgary. We have two children, Jennifer &
Tyler, and they are both very involved in 4-H and have shown at Agribition
in Regina and the Pen Show in Medicine Hat. We run about 75 head of
cattle, both red and black, most of them being purebreds and a hand full
of commercials that we put embryos in. We are working to eventually
have a herd of 100 purebred cows. Our focus will always remain on quality
over quantity.
We first became aware of the Gelbvieh breed in 1990 when we saw a breeder
showing them locally. With both of us working off the farm we needed
to change our cattle program. We decided to try Gelbvieh and were very
impressed with the calving ease and weaning weights and have never looked
back. Very pleased with the results we got from using the Gelbvieh
bull on our commercial cows we decided to invest in some purebred Gelbvieh
cows. In 1993 we cut back on our commercial cows and added to our purebred
herd. In 1996 we purchased a bull, Casesun 3F who has made a great difference
to our program. We eventually sold him to another purebred breeder,
Leepart Farms, who used him a lot and loved the calves. He now has
a new home at the Doyle Farm in Manitoba. After Casesun we decided
to try some black cattle so we invested in Jack Daniels 129J, a black bull
who put a great amount of performance in our herd, and gave us a few blacks.
This year we bought MMM Calberta Resource 8307H from Jean Cochran, Pembina
Gelbvieh, in Jarvie, Alberta. He is the sire of this year's Futurity
winner in Farm Fair, JC Pembina McLeod 86M. We feel he will be a great
asset to our herd.
The Gelbvieh cattle have great dispositions, excellent maternal traits
with high milk and fertility. We've been 13 years in the business and
the past few years we have been working heavily with our AI and Embryo program.
We have had great success with both. Two years ago we flushed one
of our cows and received over 30 eggs, with these eggs being mated to Atlas
712G and Tempest 160F, resulting in great calves from both.
Our goal is to raise high quality black and red polled Gelbvieh cattle.
